Selecting situations & emotions
The application covers the most common situations adolescents and adults with disorders are confronted with. These include:
Once you have selected a situation, one or a combination of the following emotions will appear:
Finally, choose the level of intensity of your emotion. i.e. high, medium or low level of emotion.
Tap on the Cope? button to continue
- being bullied,
- in an interview,
- studying,
- competing,
- in a meeting,
- talking,
- dealing with authority,
- in a relationship,
- trying to sleep,
- in a familiy conflict,
- shopping,
- working.
Once you have selected a situation, one or a combination of the following emotions will appear:
- angry,
- anxious,
- sad
Finally, choose the level of intensity of your emotion. i.e. high, medium or low level of emotion.

Viewing short & long term strategies
A number of short term and long term strategies are presented depending on the situation, emotion and intensity of emotion that you have selected.
You can view the short term strategies by tapping the Short Term icon. Alternatively, you can view the long term strategies by tapping the Long Term icon
A list of a strategies appear sorted by their rating (from 1 to 5 stars depending on how useful the strategy has been rated by the user of the application).
The screen shows a Back button that can be used to return to the home screen. The Edit button can be used to delete strategies that have been previously added by a user as part of their personalised strategies.
You can view the short term strategies by tapping the Short Term icon. Alternatively, you can view the long term strategies by tapping the Long Term icon
A list of a strategies appear sorted by their rating (from 1 to 5 stars depending on how useful the strategy has been rated by the user of the application).
The screen shows a Back button that can be used to return to the home screen. The Edit button can be used to delete strategies that have been previously added by a user as part of their personalised strategies.
Viewing details & rating strategies
A number of short term and long term strategies are presented depending on the situation, emotion and intensity of emotion that you have selected.
After the list of strategies is displayed, you can view the strategy detail by tapping on the strategy. The strategy information is presented showing the strategy name, rating and description.
You can rate a strategy by moving the slider to the value that you consider most appropriate: not useful, useful or very useful.
Strategies with a high rating will appear at the top of the screen the next time you view the list of strategies.

Adding your own strategies
After you have selected a situation, emotion and intensity of emotion, short and long term strategies are shown.
You can also add your own strategies by tapping the Add Strategy icon. A new screen will appear where you can enter the following information:
Once you have selected the media (favourite images or your favourite playlist) tap on the Save button to add the new entry.
Your personalised strategy should now appear in the list of strategies for the particular situation and emotion.

- Name
- Description
- Short term / long term?
- Media (images or music)
Once you have selected the media (favourite images or your favourite playlist) tap on the Save button to add the new entry.

Adding your own images
When adding your own strategy, you may want to add personalised images or images that make you feel better.
On the Add Strategy page, tap the Add Media button.
Tap on the Tap here to add a photo button.
Depending on the capabilities of your device, you will be able to either:
If you select a photo from your existing library (Choose Existing Photo) use theChoose button to add the new image.
When taking a new photo (Take New Photo), tap on the Use button to select the photo.
Tap the Done button to go back to the add strategy screen
On the Add Strategy page, tap the Add Media button.
Tap on the Tap here to add a photo button.
Depending on the capabilities of your device, you will be able to either:
- Choose an existing photo from your photo library
- Or take a new photo
If you select a photo from your existing library (Choose Existing Photo) use theChoose button to add the new image.
When taking a new photo (Take New Photo), tap on the Use button to select the photo.
Tap the Done button to go back to the add strategy screen
Creating your playlists
Personalised playlists can be linked to a combination of situations and emotions. For example, if a particular situation makes you feel sad, you could create a playlist called ‘Sad’ which contains a list of songs that make you feel better.
To create a new playlist, tap on the iPhone or iPod Music icon.
On the Playlist page, tap on ‘Add Playlist …” to add a new playlist.
Once the new playlist has been created, you can add your favourite songs.
The Playlist can now be selected from the How2Cope application by following the instructions in the ADDING YOUR OWN MUSIC section.
To create a new playlist, tap on the iPhone or iPod Music icon.
On the Playlist page, tap on ‘Add Playlist …” to add a new playlist.
Once the new playlist has been created, you can add your favourite songs.
The Playlist can now be selected from the How2Cope application by following the instructions in the ADDING YOUR OWN MUSIC section.
Adding your own music
When adding your own strategy, you may want to add personalised playlists that make you feel better.
On the Add Strategy page, tap the Add media button. Then tap on the Tap here to add music button. You can:
Once you have selected your favourite songs, tap on the Done button to exit the song selection screen.
Tap the Done button to go back to the add strategy screen.

- add all songs from a previously set playlist or
- add one or multiple songs from an artist or
- add a combination of any songs in your music collection or
- add all songs from an album
Once you have selected your favourite songs, tap on the Done button to exit the song selection screen.
Tap the Done button to go back to the add strategy screen.
Deleting strategies

You can view the short term strategies by tapping the Short Term icon. Alternatively, you can view the Long Term strategies by tapping the long term icon

Tap on the strategy you wish to delete and then tap the Delete button.
Please note that sample strategies in the How2Cope application can not be deleted.
